Santa Claus is coming

I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news but…

Santa?

Santa’s Elves have had a tough time keeping up with jolly ol’ St. Nick on Christmas Eve. Since Santa’s sleigh is not big enough to hold all of the toys for his trip around the world, he frequently returns to the North Pole for a new load of presents. The Elves didn’t know where Santa was or whether he was coming or going.

Now they use SantaGPS — a sophisticated Global Positioning System (GPS). With this technology, the Elves always know where Santa is, how many homes he has visited, and when he is headed back to the North Pole for another load.

And now for a politically correct greeting at this time of the year …

Please accept with no obligation, implied or implicit, my best wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible, low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral celebration of the summer holiday season, practiced within the most enjoyable traditions of the religious persuasion or secular practices of your choice, with respect for the religious/secular persuasions and/or traditions of others, or their choice not to practice religious or secular traditions at all;

.. And a fiscally successful, personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make Australia great, (not to imply that Australia is necessarily greater than any other country), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith, choice of computer platform, or sexual orientation of the wisher.

Disclaimer: By accepting this greeting, you are accepting these terms. This greeting is subject to clarification or withdrawal. It is freely transferable with no alteration to the original greeting. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually implement any of the wishes for her/himself or theirs, and is void where prohibited by law, and is revocable at the sole discretion of the wisher. This wish is warranted to perform within the usual application of good tidings for a period of one year, or until the issuance of another holiday greeting, whichever comes first.

In other words…. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Touch powder

Materials

  • Concentrated aqueous ammonia
  • Iodine
  • filter papers
  • spatula

Method

  1. In a beaker add some crystals of iodine to some of the ammonia solution and allow to react for a couple of minutes.
  2. Remove some of the precipitate to a piece of filter paper and spread evenly across paper. Let dry in a sheltered place.
  3. Once dry simple contact will cause it to explode

Safety
Note that this substance is an explosive. Make sure no large lumps are left to dry on the filter paper. Don’t make too much touch power in one batch, and don’t try to store it for later use. Avoid getting these chemicals on skin or in eyes.

Explanation
The precipitate created is Nitrogen tri-iodide. This compound is very unstable and is extremely sensitive to pressure, and will explode at the slightest provocation (much like some Venturers I know!) The ingredients in this demo are reasonably easy to get hold, even outside of the laboratory, so I would suggest not being too forthcoming about their exact nature.

Well, we did it! Was is worth it? You bet!!

Claustral Canyon Trip

Awesome!

On a trip through Claustral with EcoTeam (thanks Guys!), got out to the split rock ok (Darren on the climb, Tracy on belay). Then started hunting in the rock under the rock, around the rock, under the ledge behind the rock; but no cache to be found.

SHUTDOWN

Netware Shutdown

Finally the day has arrived and we have shutdown our Netware servers, this has been in the pipelines for over a year and was *way* overdue. This also removes the need for IPX in our network so the subnet revamps and Gigabit rollout can now proceed ‘full steam ahead’

(“so long, and thanks for all the fish”)
