We’re on the road to VISTA … II

“well we know where we’re goin’,
but we don’t know where we’ve been
and we know what we’re knowin’,
but we can’t say what we’ve seen
and we’re not little children,
and we know what we want
and the future is certain,
give us time to work it out”

– Talking Heads

Last night was Halloween so I needed to get a good scare (?). The path I selected for this scare was to update the Vista RC1 laptop to RC2. Having seen VirusScan 8.5i thump Office2007 with the RC1 install it was Microsofts turn for revenge as RC2 pole-axed VirusScan. After a complete uninstall of VS, a restart and a fresh install things seem to be back to normal. And what do you know, my touchpad is back in action :)

Vista with 2GB RAM ‘great’ says Dell CEO [1]
Windows Vista may need double the RAM that Microsoft recommends, a Dell executive said Friday.

In a speech at Shanghai’s Jiaotong University, Dell chief executive Kevin Rollins told Bloomberg News: “I think they tell you maybe 1 gig [gigabyte] of memory is okay. No. Two gigs of memory would be great.”

On its Vista website, Microsoft recommends 1GB of RAM for running the operating system’s touted Aero interface. The minimum system requirements, however, claim that 512MB of memory will be sufficient. [...]

I must agree, the 512MB or RAM just doesn’t cut it! I think this machine needs a touch more ram, and I think trialling 2GB would be prety much on the ticket.

When you add the Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset [winvista32_beta_1092] (nx6320 Graphics card) the README warns you;

************************************************************
* 1. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
************************************************************

1. The system must contain one of the following Intel
Chipsets:
Intel(R) 945G Express Chipset
Intel(R) 945GZ Express Chipset
Intel(R) 946GZ Express Chipset
Intel(R) G965 Express Chipset
Intel(R) Q963 Express Chipset
Intel(R) Q965 Express Chipset
Mobile Intel(R) 940GML Express Chipset
Mobile Intel(R) 945GM Express Chipset
Mobile Intel(R) 945GMS Express Chipset

2. The software should be installed on systems with at
least 1GB of system memory.

3. There should be sufficient hard disk space in the <TEMP>
directory on the system in order to install this
software.

The drivers included with this distribution package are
designed to function with pre-release versions of
Microsoft Windows* Vista (RC1/RC2).

This lets me install and run Second Life, but with only 512MB of RAM the online world is l–a–g–g–c–i–t–y.

Vista Desktop Deployment
I tripped over an article on the The Windows Vista Team Blog on Business Desktop Deployment: Tools + Guidance, this blog then points to a Technet page Desktop Deployment. Follow this a little further and you also get Windows Vista Deployment Resources.
