One of the big problems with moving over to the iPaq 6515 from the iPaq 6365 was the loss of WLAN connectivity. Sure you get the GPS, but I tend to need the WiFi connectivity more than I need the GPS. As we started investigating the syncML/syncXML calendar synchronization it quickly became evident that we needed WiFi for these units. The good news is that the iPaq 6515 has a SDIO slot, so a quick net search later and we have some PocketGear SDio WiFi (SDW820) cards to play with.

How about the drivers? The cards ship with the drivers on CD that install via ActiveSync, this also installs a WLAN option into the Programs directory. Running the WLAN application places the WiFi signal strength graph into the task bar from which you can turn the radio on and off and access the WLAN Utility via ‘Open’. Notice that the communications icon changes from the ActiveSync/GPRS icon to a WLAN icon. ( I have had quite a few problems with WLAN knocking out syncronization, and vice-versa … this has resulted in needing to reset the entire iPaq.)

When a password protected network appears, the select box dissapears too quickly, there is no time to enter the required text. I have found it best to preconfigure the connection via;
Settings > Network Cards > Configure Wireless Network > Network Key
The WLAN Utilty provides some good tools, including some useful signal strength and quality meters.

Well now we have some WiFi. The interface is a bit clumsy, but perhaps a driver update will fix this? Currently running Driver 1.24 and Utility 2.32.4.2005; there is a 1.25.3 driver upgrade (utility 2.35.6.2005) available. The driver is in the form of a CAB file rather than an installer.
Of interest the WLAN option is not added to the iPaq wireless screen as it is avaliable on the 6365, this means that you do not have the “all off” capability that was available in the earlier unit.
