Time to play with the HP dc7700 to see if we can get it imaged and deployed for testing on Monday. The dc7700 has an Intel(R) 82566DM Gigabit Network Connection (no longer the Integrated Broadcom NetLink), this means hunting for and testing a new NDIS driver for our boot disk!
The Intel 82566DM GB NIC requires you to grab the DOS Intel 8256x Ethernet Controllers to use the e1000.dos NDIS driver (12-09-2006 version). The Ghost 8.x version will NOT work with these cards. This also means that the e1000.dos NDIS drivers will need to be updated on our Ghost servers for the management consoles to work.
This combo tests well with Ghost v8.3 so it’s time to archive some copies, for this I keep sets of my boot disks stored as IMG files created with RawWrite for Windows, this makes it a lot easier when it comes to modifying boot sets.
UPDATE:
I have uploaded disk images files for these boot disks see GHOST boot disks for HP dc7700 (II) for the details.

How did the test go?
I’m haveing problems finding makeing a bootable network diskett that works with dc7700. I’m using Ghost Boot Wizard that comes with Ghost.
Kind regard

If you need a ghost floppy for a DC7700 please e-mail the adress above and I will send you one.
Kind regards
Testing was fine, use the Ghost 8 boot wizard to build a boot disk set with the e1000.dos driver, then update the disk(s) with the e1000.dos driver in the DOS Intel 8256x Ethernet Controllers (12-09-2006 version).
You can also update the e1000.dos on your Ghost server so that it creates the disks with the new NDIS version.
cheers
I created a bootable USB stick with the e1000 driver & that part works OK – thanks!
However, the only drive that is available to Ghost is the USB drive.
In 5 years of ghosting, I have never seen this; is senility setting in?
Any halp appreciated.
Any luck making a Ghost Boot CD with this?
I am looking for help on how to do this. I currently have an ISO that works for the dc7100s and dc7600s. How can I extract the old driver out and put the new driver in?
@David
The dc7700 uses Serial ATA hard disks (dc7700 spec sheet), Ghost compatibility with Serial ATA was introduced as an update for Ghost v7.5 and Ghost 2003. Ghost 8.x was released with compatibility with Serial ATA.
Most likely your version of ghost.exe cannot handle the SATA drive, patching or updating your Ghost should sort out this issue.
cheers
@Lockout888
I have successfully built a dc7700 Ghost Boot CD, and a boot USB key using this method.
Have a look at the very useful How to Create a Ghost 8.0 Network Boot CD [iSchool FAQs]. I use Nero instead of EasyCDCreator to build the Bootable CD as that is my product of choice and use my boot USB key as the boot disk template.

You will need an ISO editor application. I do not have a recommended ISO editor but a quick Google brings up a few options such as UltraISO that should do the trick.

Ghost.exe v7.5 can handle SATA as I’ve used it on Dell 745. The answer I’ve found is to include the -FNI command line switch.
@David
Thanks for the heads up on Ghost v7.5 and the -FNI switch. I am currently using Ghost v8.3 without any switch in our environment (I haven’t had v7.5 in production for quite a while now).
From the Symantec FAQ;
* If you have an IDE and an SATA drive, or only IDE drives:
-FNI Forces Ghost to use the BIOS to gain access to the IDE drive.
* If you have an SATA drive and no IDE drives:
-NOIDE Disables access to IDE devices.
It would be worthwhile giving the -NOIDE switch a run for the dc7700 boot disk to see if this solves your problem.

I’m trying to download the Ghost dc7700 boot disk 1.img but it’s not available. Can someone email to me.
Cheers
@Indy
What error are you getting? The download tests fine from here.
Hey,
Tried the link to disk 1 today and it work fine..Thanks
Hi
I have been trying to make a Ghost book disk to map a network drive with no luck. After I enter the network password the boot disk stops responding and does not complete.
I am using Ghost 2003 and have used the PRODOS2 file downloaded from the Intel website. Any help would be great.
Cheers
We are having the same issue with the network drives not mapping. If anyone has a solution to this, please advise.
I’ve run into the same problem… when I try to do any mapping, the computer just reboots. I’ve seen similar complaints on HP’s website. Does anyone out there have a working DOS network boot disk for the 7700… and if so, could you make an image of it and share?
I should have checked the HP website again this morning. I noticed they they have released a new e1000.dos (Jan 23rd). I now have a custom Bart’s Boot Floppy that can handle the VL420, EVO-510, EVO-530, DC7600 & the DC7700. One of these days we’re going to have to get off floppy disks!
e1000.dos http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/getattachment.do?attachmentId=285061&ext=.dos
(be sure to rename it e1000.dos)
Bill you’re a saviour! Spent 3hrs trying to figure out why the HP grabbed an ip, but was unable to map network drives. The link to the newer e1000.dos file worked a treat, mapping drives no probs
Thanks a mill Bill, if your ever in Melb Australia I’ll buy ya a beer
Just go to Intel:

Does anyone have a bootable GHOST CD with these drivers for the Intel 82566DM GB . I am using Symantec Ghost version 8.
Thanks
@angelo
Have a look at the very useful How to Create a Ghost 8.0 Network Boot CD [iSchool FAQs].
Using the floppy images you can produce a Boot CD very quickly.
cheers
Thank you so much. This helps a lot!! Especially as I already had an image made for the 7600 and found out that we were getting the 7700!! Quick and Easy, why are there not more helpful people like this!!
Sir…………..you are a prince amongst men!!!
Any chance I could get a copy of the HP7700 Ghost Boot Disk – I’m having a difficult time getting this to work.
I have a boot floppy that will successfully load the e1000 NIC. However, once I add CD Rom support, the NIC will no longer work but the CD drive works properly. Has any one else ran into this problem?
@CT_Eagle
I have not seen this issue, which version of Ghost are you using?
cheers
I am using Ghost 2003 but I do not think it is a problem with Ghost. This problem is occuring with a floppy where I have not even added any Ghost files. I normally use a floppy when making Ghost Boot CDs to iron out any problems. Once I have a working floppy, I make a CD with the added Ghost files.
@CT_Eagle
Are you using my floppy templates or is this your own floppy set that we are talking about?
We have used these floppies to create useful Boot CD’s via the method described in – How to Create a Ghost 8.0 Network Boot CD [iSchool FAQs]. We have been using Ghost v8.3 to give the best SATA support level (currently running Ghost Solution Suite v1.1 but are preparing a migration plan for the move to Solution Suite 2)
With Ghost 2003 you will probably still be seeing issues with the SATA drives found in the dc7700. I do not run the Ghost 200n software so I am a bit hazy with where the SATA handling improved, I can say that we found that it was best to move to the latest version to handle the SATA drives.
I’ll see if I can put together an ISO of our Boot CD (without the ghost.exe) to see if this is useful for you.
cheers
The floppy that I am using was produced using the Ghost Boot CD wizard. I used the drive mapping option. I have been able to use this template for HP Vectra VLi8s, VL400MT, HP XW 4400 and XW6200 PCs. The only modification I make is to change the NIC driver, edit the config.sys and protocol.ini files depending on which NIC is used by the PC. The template actually works for the dc7700 PC. I can boot off of the floppy and connect to a remote share using “net use g: \\PCNAME\ShareName”. The problem occurs when I attempt to add the oakcdrom.sys. As soon as I do this, the NIC no longer loads properly but the CD works correctly.
If you could provide me with the ISO of your boot CD, that would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
@visibleprocrastinations
I finally got this to work. I don’t know exactly why the changes that I made work but they do work.
The first problem was in the Config.sys file. I had to load all of the network devices in low memory and the oakcdrom.sys device in high memory. The following is my config.sys:
DEVICE=\net\protman.dos /I:\net
DEVICE=\net\dis_pkt.dos
DEVICE=\net\E1000.DOS
DEVICE=NET\NTSTS.DOS
DEVICE=NET\DLSHELP.SYS
DEVICEHIGH=A:\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH,UMB
DEVICEHIGH=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:mscd001
LASTDRIVE = Z
The second problem was with the startup order within the autoexec.bat file. I had to execuate netbind and net start prior to mscdex. The following is my autoexec.bat
@echo off
SET TZ=GHO-01:00
SET PATH=A:\NET\;a:\;%PATH%;
net\netbind.com
A:\NET\NET START
mscdex /L:D /d:mscd001
If I change the device memory settings in the config.sys or the start up order in autoexec.bat, the NIC will no longer load.
Thanks for trying to help me with this item. Hopefully you if you run into a similar problem, my information above will help you.
I trying to create an image of a DC7700 using Ghost version 8.2. The task always fails. Error is “failed to reboot client to recovery partition”. I have no idea how to get pass this. It seems to be a nic issue.
Any help will be appreciated…Thanks in advance.
@tcassell
what network card driver are you using? Generally this error (Ghost Console Failure Message) is caused by an incorrect network card driver.
If you are using the default E1000.DOS driver supplied with Ghost v8.2 you’ll probably hit this error. If you use the updated version for the Intel 8256x Ethernet Controllers your problem should be fixed.
see: Error: “…to virtual partition failed” or “Unable to defragment…” when running a Task

btw. we have started testing the dc7800 and it looks like we need another update for this model … will post the results of this testing soon.

hi all,
i had the same issue where i was unable to ghost images of dc7700 and have overcome this after a painfull two weeks to get hold of the ndis2 drivers as well as working out how the tech guy before me set up the norton ghost cast boot disks.
main things that worked for me intialy was downloading the ndis2 from post above (many thanks) this pretty much solved my biggest issue evrything else fell into place (yea rite)
I have bnew issue now i cant seem to find the ndis2 driver for the hp dc7600 which uses a broadcom netextreme gigabit ethernet ?
Any ideas where i can get this from ?
cheers
@ali mir

The HP7600 uses the B57.dos NDIS2 driver, the v7.68a driver shipped with Ghost 8.0 will not boot the DC 7600.
Checking back in our tool kit I see that we moved to the Broadcom Driver v8.28 on our boot disks, and this is the version that we are still using.
Both links below will give you an option to download the DOS NDIS2 package (currently at v.10.4.6). Unzip the file and drop the B57.dos into your boot disk and all should be good.
cheers
