Tour de France 2007 XVII

Tonight we have Stage 16 ( Orthez – Col d’Aubisque ) covering a distance of 218.5 km.

The six French and two German teams competing in the Tour de France will protest against doping before the start of the 16th stage, a 218.5km ride from Orthez to the Col d’Aubisque. Teams Agritubel, AG2r, Francaise des Jeux, Bouygues Telecom, Cofidis, Credit Agricole, Gerolsteiner and T-Mobile have regrouped in a Movement for a Credible Cycling. They ask for all the teams to abide by their good behaviour charter adopted in 2005. [eurosport.yahoo]

There has been at least one small explosion on part of the Spanish route of the Tour de France. [Sky News]

And here we go again;

GOURETTE, France – The Tour de France sustained a new blow Wednesday after a senior French doping official said yet another rider failed a doping test – this time for testosterone. [Forbes]

Moreni positive for testosterone
Cristian Moreni of Cofidis has been confirmed as rider who tested positive for testosterone following the Tour de France’s 11th stage on July 19. Coming just one day after news that Astana’s Alexandre Vinoukourov tested positive for a blood transfusion, news of the second positive doping control hit the Tour de France when the French newspaper L’Equipe reported Wednesday afternoon that one sample from stage 11 has tested positive for testosterone. It was later announced that the rider in question was Cofidis’ Cristian Moreni. [Cycling News]

Leader Rasmussen kicked off Tour
Race leader Michael Rasmussen has been kicked out of the Tour de France and sacked by his Rabobank team.

Tour de France 2007 XVIb – Vinokourov tests positive

A touch of déjà vu about this news;

Double stage victor Alexandre Vinokourov (Astana)learned Tuesday that he had tested positive for homologous blood doping following his victory in last Saturday’s stage 13 individual time trial. [VeloNews]

If Vinokourov’s B sample comes back positive, Aussie Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto) would be declared the winner of stage 13. [VeloNews]

With the whole of the Astana team pulling out this is extremely bad news as Klöden was, in my opinion, riding far better than Vino.

“I am convinced that we act in love of the sport and those who love the sport. I am convinced we will the battle but we need an ethical revolution. … We all feel cheated but the one who cheated was Alexander Vinokourov. The fans want riders who don’t cheat. I want to carry on the battle. — Christian Prudhomme, Tour director [Cycling News]
