illegal whaling

Now we have a legal finding that the whaling in Australia’s Antarctic waters is illegal;

The court orders that the respondent be restrained from killing, injuring, taking or interfering with any Antarctic minke whale, fin whale or humpback whale in the Australian whale sanctuary, or treating or possessing any such whale killed or taken in the Australian whale sanctuary” — Justice James Allsop, Federal Court judge.

Unfortunately enforcement will be difficult. The Australian Government now needs to stand up and enforce this ruling.

‘Video conferencing on steroids’ a giant leap for research
A $600,000 “video conferencing on steroids” set-up at Melbourne University proved its usefulness almost immediately at its launch yesterday.
On a five-metre-wide, super-high-definition screen, Melbourne neurologist Professor Graeme Jackson swooped and dived through a 3D video model of never-seen-before deep structures in the human brain, showing off his latest research.

Fast data link for researchers
World-best collaborative research between Australian and United States universities has taken a giant leap forward with the successful launch today of a 1Gigabit per second data connection between the two countries.
The ultrabroadband optical-fibre link – roughly 250 times faster than the standard broadband connection offered in metropolitan Melbourne – was demonstrated at the University of California San Diego and at the University of Melbourne today.

The desktops and gaming areas of gaming industry movers and shakers
I’ve had a pet project I’ve been working on for years, three of them if my memory is right. It started as a simple idea: You can judge a lot from a person’s desk. I bet you could judge just as much from their home entertainment system. So I decided it would be fun to try and track down some pictures from the work desks and home gaming set-ups of the people who work in and cover the video game industry. Simple right? Not so much.
