Tour de France 2008 – Stage II

Last night was Stage 2 ( Auray to Saint-Brieuc ) covering a distance of 164.5 km.

Thomas Voeckler (Bouygues Telecom) and Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) had an exciting escape, and for a few moments it looked like Chavanel had broken the odds and was in with a chance for a win; it was not to be as the sprinters came home and Thor Hushovd (Credit Agricole) taking the prize.

Disappointing to see last year’s King of the Mountain, Juan Mauricio Soler (Barloworld), in so much trouble with his injury from stage one. Hopefully he can come good before we reach the mountains. Now that his GC hopes are gone, perhaps he can take out his frustration on the mountains?

Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d’Epargne) retains the maillot jaune, although some of his team finished towards the back of the peleton. Are they working too hard too early?

Results:

16:57 – Hushovd Takes The Win!
Thor Hushovd has come around everyone and claimed the stage. He beat a Columbia rider, probably Cavendish. [www.letour.fr]

Why Fly When You Can Float?
(2008-Jul-05) [NYT]
… As the cost of fuel soars and the pressure mounts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, several schemes for a new generation of airship are being considered by governments and private companies. “It’s a romantic project,” said Mr. Massaud, 45, sitting amid furniture designs in his Paris studio, “but then look at Jules Verne.”
It has been more than 70 years since the giant Hindenburg zeppelin exploded in a spectacular fireball over Lakehurst, N.J., killing 36 crew members and passengers, abruptly ending an earlier age of airships. But because of new materials and sophisticated means of propulsion, a diverse cast of entrepreneurs is taking another look at the behemoths of the air. …
