Tom Dickins – Sad For The Weather
A crowd sourced song: A few weeks ago – I asked twitter for suggestions for song ideas – giving myself the challenge of writing a song in ten minutes. Two tweets in particular set the wheels in motion for this song, one was a link to a Wiki page about “Seasonal Affected Depression” – the other was “the story of a coffeemaker and a toaster – theirs is a forbidden love”.

* If students are digital natives why don’t they like our e-learning? (2012-May-26) [The corridor of uncertainty]
… However the report ends with some very relevant thoughts. Maybe students’ lukewarm attitude to e-learning is because the e-learning on offer is simply not very compelling or well designed? What if the e-learning of today is simply a pale electronic version of traditional teaching and therefore is always compared to the “real thing.” Maybe we haven’t actually changed anything, we’ve just put the classroom on the net without much thought of why we might want to do that. …

* ADVENTURES OF PHILIP MARLOWE (Old Time Radio Researchers Group)
Elements of mystery have always been represented in literature, but the detective story didn’t arrive on the scene until the mid 1800′s. Edgar Allan Poe’s The Murders in the Rue Morgue, published in 1841, was the first. The Murder’s main character, C. Auguste Dupin, was a brilliant detective who relied on superior deductive powers to solve the crime. He and his unnamed narrator companion solved this and two other mysteries…

The Eurovision Song Contest 2012 was the 57th annual Eurovision Song Contest. It was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, following Azerbaijan's win in the 2011 Contest. The two semi-finals were held on 22 and 24 May 2012, and the final was held on 26 May 2012. Forty-two countries announced their participation in the contest, with Montenegro returning, having last taken part in 2009, and Poland and Armenia withdrawing.
It was won by singer Loreen from Sweden with the song "Euphoria". Russia finished second, Serbia third, host Azerbaijan finished fourth, and Albania fifth, its first Top 5 placing. Germany, Italy and Spain were the three members of the "Big Five" that managed to rank within the top 10, finishing in 8th, 9th and 10th places respectively. — wikipedia

* Children need freedom to roam online (2012-May-18) [The Age]
The important thing, boyd points out, is to give the kid the ability to handle choices, assess risks and take what she calls “strategic” risks, or calculated risks. You want, in other words, to create the kid who can handle the internet without you. And how can they become that kid if you are watching them all the time, if you are always hovering right there next to them?
* Should I let my child use facebook? No, says cyber-safety expert (2012-May-17) [ABC 774]
A former Victoria Police officer turned cyber-safety consultant says parents who let their children go on facebook before they are teenagers ‘are not doing a good enough job as a parent’.
Cyber safety expert Susan McLean advised Harlaxton State School in Queensland, who are threatening to expel students who join facebook or refuse to delete their accounts.

Interview – Professor Elemental
Do you feel that the abundance of recorded music that is easily available on the internet has led people to place more importance on the live experience as the ‘authentic’ way to hear music?
Yes, I think that’s one of the big advantages a musician has now. I definitely get a lot of people coming to see me live on that kind of basis. That’s why it’s all the more important to have a memorable live show and lots of merch and music to sell while you are there. How useful do you think social media (such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc) is for up-and-coming musicians and artists?
It is HUGE, you can’t underestimate it. My entire music career has been launched by a single YouTube video and is maintained by Twitter, Facebook and the like. But it is worth being smart about it, there is no point in bombarding your fans with endless ads. Myspace is a good example of how musicians who over sell themselves can lose impact very quickly. Find your market and get to know your fans. I still get excited when I chat to a rapper I love on Twitter, I think you can build a genuine relationship with the people who listen to your music in a way you have never been able to before.– Interview – Professor Elemental (2012-Apr-27) [M3 Event]
