Tour de France 2012 – Stage 8

Stage Details:

Tonight is Stage 8, Belfort > Porrentruy, 157.5 km

This medium mountain stage promises to be even more demanding as it will be short and difficult. The mere mention of these ascents, whose peaks crown the route in the Jura, illustrates how difficult it is: the Côte du Passage de la Douleur, the Col de La Croix, etc. This final ascent, about 20 kilometres from the finish will be a very decisive factor in the stage.Christian Prudhomme’s Analysis

Olympic champion and last year’s King of the Mountains Samuel Sanchez looks doubtful for London 2012 after crashing heavily during today’s eighth stage of the Tour and being forced to pull out.
He and compatriot Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) hit the ground approximately 56 kilometres into today’s stage, with the Euskaltel Euskadi rider coming off much worse. While Valverde was able to remount and to make his way back to the peloton, Sanchez remained on the ground and was eventually stretchered away.

Thibaut Pinot (FDJ-BigMat) pulled off a famous home victory in stage 8 of the 2012 Tour de France. The Tour’s youngest competitor passed leader Frederik Kessiakoff (Astana) with 17km to race and launched a bold attack that left him with enough of a gap to hold off a host of big name challengers who pursued him intensely, but ultimately in vain, over the final kilometres. There were ecstatic scenes of jubilation from the home fans and from Pinot’s team as he crossed the line with 26 seconds to spare.
