Stage Details:
Tonight is Stage 17, Bagnères-de-Luchon > Peyragudes, 143.5 km
“Short (143.5 km) but tough! We designed a Pyrenean counterpart to the Alpine stage between Albertville and La Toussuire. But now that we are a mere three days from the finish, if the general classification has not been decided yet this will be the last chance for climbers to build a buffer. There will also be loads of points up for grabs for the mountains classification… The course offers no respite. The first climb is the Col de Menté, famous since 1971, which will be followed by the Col des Ares and the Port de Balès. This will be the first time that the finish is decided on the Plateau de Peyragudes, a ski resort in the Hautes-Pyrénées.” — Jean-Francios Pescheux Analysis

The final day in the Pyrenees saw Alejandro Valverde emerge victorious on the 17th Stage of the Tour de France after a solo ride to the finish over the last 30km.
Valverde (Movistar) left a shattered peloton behind to cross the finish line first at the end of the 143.5km stage from Bagneres-de-Luchon to Peyragudes.
It was Valverde’s third career Tour de France stage victory, and his first since 2008.

Race leader Bradley Wiggins came over the finish line of the 143.5 km stage between Bagneres-de-Luchon and Peyragudes on the wheel of Sky teammate Chris Froome at around 18secs later.
The pair had led a frantic chase of Valverde on the day’s fifth and last climb but Valverde, who had broken away from an early escape group on the Col de Peyresourde, dug deep to hold off the British pair.

Froome’s pace, however, did some more damage to Sky’s yellow jersey rivals with Italian Vincenzo Nibali trailing home around 18secs further adrift.
