Music Monday #0136 – Slayer (Jeff Hanneman Tribute)

Slayer founder Jeff Hanneman dies at 49
Slayer guitarist and founding member Jeff Hanneman has died of liver failure at the age of 49 after battling a flesh-eating disease caused by a spider bite.
The band released a statement saying that their “bandmate and brother” passed away at a Californian hospital yesterday morning.– (2013-May-03) [ABC News]

Slayer has been one of the most prominent bands in thrash metal over the last three decades, one of the Big 4 with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax.

Slayer is an American thrash metal band formed in Huntington Park, California in 1981 by guitarists Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman. Slayer rose to mainstream fame with their 1986 release Reign in Blood, and is credited as one of the “Big Four” thrash metal acts, along with Metallica, Megadeth and Anthrax. Slayer’s sales are in the estimated high 20 millions, although they have never publicly announced their sales worldwide. However, between the years 1991 and 2004, Slayer sold over 3.5 million albums in the U.S.
Slayer’s musical style involve fast tremolo picking, double bass drumming, and shouted vocals. Hanneman, King, and bassist/vocalist Tom Araya, contribute to the band’s lyrics. King and Hanneman create and arrange the music with additional help from drummer Dave Lombardo and sometimes Araya. The band’s lyrics and album art, which cover topics such as serial killers, necrophilia, Satanism, religion, anti-religion, and warfare, have generated album bans, delays, lawsuits and criticism from religious groups and the public. Their music has been highly influential, often being cited by many bands as an influence musically, visually, and lyrically.

Music Monday #0135 – Chrissy Amphlett

Former Divinyls singer Chrissy Amphlett has died in New York after a long battle with cancer. When you think Australian women of rock, you think Chrissy Amphlett. RIP

Christine Joy “Chrissy” Amphlett (25 October 1959 – 22 April 2013) was an Australian singer, who was lead singer of the rock band Divinyls.
She grew up in Geelong as a singer and dancer. She left home as a teenager and travelled to England, France and Spain where she was imprisoned for three months for singing on the streets.
In May 2001, Divinyls’ “Science Fiction”, written by Amphlett and lead guitarist Mark McEntee, was selected by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) as one of the Top 30 Australian songs of all time. Amphlett and McEntee barely spoke after the band had separated in 1996, but resumed contact when they were inducted in the 2006 ARIA Hall of Fame, eventually announcing a new tour and album.

Billy Bragg – Thatcherites

USUALLY, when a public figure dies, even their staunchest enemies briefly suspend hostilities in respect for the dead. But with Margaret Thatcher that was never going to be the case. She was loathed by too many, for too long. — [The Age]

You thatcherites by name, lend an ear, lend an ear
You thatcherites by name lend an ear
You thatcherites by name, your faults i will proclaim,
Your doctrines i must blame, you will hear, you will hear

Music Monday #131 – Mr Bungle

Mr. Bungle was an American experimental band from Eureka, California. The band was formed in 1985 while the members were still in high school, and was named after a children’s educational film regarding bad habits which was featured in a Pee-wee Herman HBO special in the early ’80s. Mr. Bungle released four demo tapes in the mid to late 1980s before being signed to Warner Bros. Records and releasing three full-length studio albums between 1991 and 1999. The band toured in 2000 to support their last album but in 2004 they disbanded. Although Mr. Bungle went through several line up changes early in their career, the longest-serving members were vocalist Mike Patton, guitarist Trey Spruance, bassist Trevor Dunn, saxophonist Clinton “Bär” McKinnon and drummer Danny Heifetz.
