This one weighs in at a hefty 378.0 MB download, which seems a remarkable large file for redrawing the signal strength chart.
Did today’s iPhone 4.0.1 update address the antenna issues?
No, and we didn’t expect it to. The 4.0.1 update, which Apple promised two weeks ago, addresses only how bars are displayed on the screen. It’s a completely unrelated issue. We’ll report more on this change later. [2]
As most iPhone users likely know, Apple released a software update on Thursday to address the bar display algorithm in the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G. Just as the company promised earlier this month, iOS 4.0.1 changes how Apple calculates the number of bars shown to the user in an attempt to give a more realistic picture of the cell signal being picked up by the phone (read: fewer bars). And, according to our testing after running the update, that’s exactly what it does. [4]
iPhone owners attempting to install the latest software update from Apple Thursday afternoon say that the process repeatedly fails. The reports cropped up on Apple’s own support forums. …
Problems installing 4.0.1 don’t appear to be universal. CNET had no problem installing the update earlier Thursday. It’s possible Apple’s servers that are delivering the update are overloaded by many iPhone owners trying to download the update simultaneously. [6]
I had no problems installing the update on my test 3GS. We will wait until next week to see how it works on the 3G.

It’s a sterile Disney-fied walled garden surrounded by sharp-toothed lawyers

via BOL EPISODE 1185;
Compete With Apple, You Say? · As of now, they’re selling around 90K iPhones per day compared to around 60K Android handsets. It’s a horse race!
The iPhone vision of the mobile Internet’s future omits controversy, sex, and freedom, but includes strict limits on who can know what and who can say what. It’s a sterile Disney-fied walled garden surrounded by sharp-toothed lawyers. The people who create the apps serve at the landlord’s pleasure and fear his anger.
I hate it.
I hate it even though the iPhone hardware and software are great, because freedom’s not just another word for anything, nor is it an optional ingredient.
The big thing about the Web isn’t the technology, it’s that it’s the first-ever platform without a vendor (credit for first pointing this out goes to Dave Winer). From that follows almost everything that matters, and it matters a lot now, to a huge number of people. It’s the only kind of platform I want to help build.
Apple apparently thinks you can have the benefits of the Internet while at the same time controlling what programs can be run and what parts of the stack can be accessed and what developers can say to each other.
I think they’re wrong and see this job as a chance to help prove it.
The tragedy is that Apple builds some great open platforms; I’ve been a happy buyer of their computing systems for some years now and, despite my current irritation, will probably go on using them.
