This tool works only on Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003.

Microsoft releases an updated version of this tool on the second Tuesday of each month, and as needed to respond to security incidents. You can run the tool from this Web page anytime or download it to your computer. [1]

Alcan.B is circa June, 2005. MS’s anti-malware technology team has blogged that “In February’s release of the tool (MS’s Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool), we added the ability to detect and remove a worm called Win32/Alcan.”. So seven months and a few days after information about Alcan.B was first published, MS’s Anti-Malware Engineering Team is “genuinely surprised” that 250,000 of the 250 million computers systems that ran the February Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool were infected with Alcan.B. Hard to know precisely what your problem is as it may be drivers rather than malware. As your USB is not functioning you will need to get a current antivirus product onto your machine to scan for the malware – you may be able to do this via a network connection or by using a CD.

To test to see if your USB ports themselves may be the problem it may be worthwhile using a CD based Linux distribution such as KNOPPIX. If you can use the USB ports while booted from the live Linux disk ypou should be able to transfer some antivirus product across to your hard drive to use when you boot into Windows.

    Good luck 🙂
