Tour de France 2013 – Stage 05

STAGE 05 Wednesday, July 3rd Cagnes-sur-Mer > Marseille (229 km)

… This is the special pride of the Australian late night TV watcher. Any chump can flick on the TV or scan Twitter for the illegal match stream, but only those who have grown up in our mountainously inhospitable time zones can understand the special bond that comes from being part of a community that’s stayed with things deep into the night and sacrificed sleep for sporting pleasure. From cricket to tennis to football to cycling, no other country has so much of its emotional well-being and self-worth so consistently invested in events taking place on the other side of the world. And no other country has embraced the liberation from responsibility that those vast stretches of late night sport invite with such enthusiasm. …

Stage 5 was the second longest stage of the 2013 tour (and at times it felt like the longest *yawn*) resulted in the six rider breakaway being caught and a bunch sprint won by Cav. OGE had a strong performance keeping Gerro in Yellow and riders in the top three GC places. With 74.6km remaining Twitter lit up as we finally saw what many of us have hoped for when the roadside randoms run along side the riders annoyingly closely; when a roadside Tifosi clothes lined a running Tifosi. With one crash with 15km remaining taking out Marcel Kittel (Argos-Shimano) and Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Sharp) and then another in the final 200 metres taking down many riders the Doctors list will need careful examination for those running TDF Fantasy teams.
