Tour de France 2013 – Stage 06

STAGE 06 Thursday, July 4th Aix-en-Provence > Montpellier (177 km)

This stage brought to you by the words NERVOUS, ECHELON and MISTRAL.

Today was all about the Mistral allowing for the formation of echelons and blowing the race apart like HTC did so many years ago – until is wasn’t *fizzz*. Echelons were formed but the teams were using them as a survival mechanism more than the ‘rip the race asunder’ tactic.

Orica GreenEDGE continue in the malliot jaune as Daryl Impey becomes the first South African to wear the yellow. In the sprinters competition Gorilla took the ‘best of the rest’ intermediate and the final sprints today – we have a green Jersey competition people! (If anyone has a translation of Cav’s outburst after the stage I’d like to read it, I can’t translate Cavendish myself).

In the climbers jersey competition Rolland continues by default as we had no real climbs in today’s parcours. Although the mood on Twitter has been stormy with respect to the fashion of the polka dots : To polka dot bike shorts, Australia says no!

2011 Domaine L’Hortus Pic Saint Loup Bergerie
Moving into the Languedoc, Pic St Loup lies just 20km away from Montpellier and takes it name from one of the two dominating peaks in the area. Known for its ripe reds, this brambly spiced syrah blend is pertly natured, yet quietly confident.

Just in case you are still feeling a little peckish there is an interesting article in today’s conversation (2013-Jul-04) about role food and drink play in a cyclist’s chances of success; Eat me, drink me – fuelling riders in the Tour de France.

#Sagwagon
Cycling Central’s signature Tour de France podcast team, the Sag Wagon, returns to the airwaves in 2013 with a mix of the quirky, the mundane, and lots of talk of Chateaux. Brought to you by host Sam Pang and regular David Culbert, first timer Annabelle Drew joins the team this year for buckets of laughs. Every day of the Tour from midday AEST. Enjoy!

The Ad Breaks
The advert that seemed to cop the most flack during tonight’s stage was the Dewar’s Scotch commercial. Why do you chose a motorsport commentator for your TDF advert?

WARNING: Playing #SBSTDF drinking games with Scotch WILL damage your liver; especially if you have nervous, echelon and mistral on your list. #Drink!
