STAGE 12 Thursday, July 11th, Fougères > Tours (218km)
… Domestic chores be damned: ”Empty the dishwasher? I’m trying to reel in a breakaway group from the peloton!” The Tour de France is a taxing event for the competitor and the viewer – the latter has a four-hour stint every night, ending at 2am and guaranteeing bleary eyes the next day, and while SBS One has a highlights show of the overnight action at 6pm, it’s live or nothing for two-wheeled warriors.
Endurance racing can be tepid viewing – try watching an entire marathon some time – but the visuals carried by SBS can be exciting, if somewhat chaotic. Befitting an event where bystanders are literally an arm’s length away, the camera glides above riders, follows them closely on the ground, and sometimes even takes on a wonky helmet view from the head of a man with zero body fat. …

Today was a typical sprint stage, nothing happening all day and then boom! A five man breakaway up the road early containing a well known Fletcha who wouldn’t be caught until the final 6 km (no Europcar in the break today, what the story there?) In the intermediate sprint ‘best of the rest’ Sagan was run across to the barriers, and Cav beats the Gorilla – seems thatCav is hungry today.
A plethora of Chateaux and anecdotes until the final 5km; a crash coming into the roundabout with 5km to go and Sven’s (OGE) on the ground sliding towards Les Vaches du Tour who is onsite for the action. At 2.4km there is a nasty crash as the peloton plays British Bulldogs on bikes. From the carnage Kittel out kicks Cav to take his third win of the Tour. As riders limp across the line we find that EBH is out with a broken collar bone and Sky down to seven riders.

Les Vaches du Tour Stage 12: Round-up
A section that will be remembered by #lvdt spotters for the #lvdtsongs hash tag more than actual vache sightings. (Well, it was a fromage au lait de chèvre stage.)
