** September Challenge – Sparkling Spring **

goodreads The Aussie Readers group on Goodreads has the September Challenge – Sparkling Spring;

September is the beginning of SPRING, so we’ll have a month full of SPARKLING SPRING ROMANCE! That’s right, for everyone who loves reading a good romance, and even those who don’t, there’s lots to interest you all. From romantic thrillers, love and romance, romantic suspense, historical romance – romance in all shapes and forms!

Not my favourite genera by a long shot. Considering that I lemmed my last choice, namely Diana Gabaldon – Outlander (Outlander #1) back in the November 2013 challenge, this may be more challenging than usual.

Looking at the August 2013 Romance Challenge, I still have a TBR that I can also use for the 2014 Spring Challenge;

Sara Gruen – Water for Elephants
As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

VERDICT: ★★★★
Thoroughly enjoyed this one.

In the Urban Fantasy vein included in the Paranormal Romance list is City of Bones (TBR from the 2011 Autumn Reading challenge)

Cassandra Clare – City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments, #1)
When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder – much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing – not even a smear of blood – to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?
This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know….

VERDICT: ★★
Not all that impressed with this one, was expecting more given it has positive reviews. Felt more like fan fic than a novel.
