The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is held annually in one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world. It is Australia’s premier road race and was the first marathon in the country to hold an International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Road Race Gold Label.
The event is held on the first weekend of July and attracts more than 27,000 participants of all ages and abilities across a number of races including the Gold Coast Airport Marathon, Wheelchair Marathon, ASICS Half Marathon, Wheelchair 15km, Southern Cross University 10km Run, Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge and Zespri Junior Dash 4km and 2km races.
The 38th annual Gold Coast Airport Marathon will be held Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 July 2016.
The plan: a sub 2h15m half marathon for Tracy to qualify for Wonderland. First 14km at c.6m22s/km then to negative split to the finish.
Actual: After taking 10 minutes to get under the starting banner it was very congested for the next 5km, the first km was at 6:34/km, the second 6:14/km and then the splits were at or below 6 minute k’s. The feeding every 6km worked well, and I was glad that we could avoid the congestion at the drink stations by using the soft bottle in the race vest as the drink stations were rather chaotic; if you need a drink, prepare for it, don’t dive across the road a the last minute!
After the turn around and heading ‘down hill’ back to the finish the pace picked up and we spent a fair bit of the run overtaking people who were slowing down.
And in the end Tracy kicked some arse! 2:04.44 – and that’s a Wonderland qualifier 🏆🎉
