For close to 46 days in a row, champion ultramarathoner Karl Meltzer ran an average of 47 miles. He ran over 6,000-foot mountains, across rivers, through thick underbrush, and over bridges. He ran in the dark, in the rain, in the heat. He climbed more than 500,000 feet — approximately 100 miles straight up into the sky — while traversing 2,190 miles. When he finally stopped running this past Sunday morning at 3:38 a.m. on Springer Mountain in Georgia, he had completed the Appalachian Trail faster than anyone before him. …
