The Halloween Howler at You Yangs Regional Park in Victoria is a night trail race, with a 42km marathon, 21km half marathon, 10km & 5km fun runs and 3 hour and 6 hour enduro events. There are two 42km events: one starting at 6pm and the second one at midnight. You can run either marathon, or both. Presentations are held shortly after completion of various events. Please note this is a low key grass roots event, with not to many bells and whistles, just a celebratory fun night on the trails.
Halloween Howler 10km.
This run popped up in my Strava feed and looked like a great concept, a night trail run for Halloween. Having wanted to do a run in the You Yangs it was quickly penciled into the calendar. The 10km was scheduled to start at 7pm, so I did run parkrun at Westerfolds on the Saturday morning and headed out to the run in the evening.
The run was two laps around a 5km circuit which weaved through the Western Plantation area, following a good mix of access trails and single trail. Not a lot of elevation over the course, but it did remind me of running through Candlebark Park at home. Having dressed as a skeleton with a running vest, it was soon apparent that it might be a little bit too warm for three layers of clothing … I ditched the bandana in to a pocked at about the 2.5km mark, but continued to run with the rest of the skeleton costume 😉 I way surprised to see that I managed to complete the first lap in around the 22 minute mark but in the end my legs told me that I may have put in a little bit too much effort at parkrun and I faded on the second lap.
(I still think that I may have been fourth, and we have a missing runner in the results).
A great event, highly recommended.
