The Wonderland Run Grampians is a 2km and 8km Saturday afternoon run, followed by 20km and 36km runs on Sunday morning, based at Halls Gap in Victoria.
Absolute freaking intensity! You are engulfed by a whole different world. You are IN the landscape. It will chew you up and spit you out and you will love it. All events based from Halls Gap in the mighty Grampians, starting from School Rd. Due to the arduous nature of the runs, runners need to qualify by having run in other events.
Wonderland 20km, 2017
This is the 20km, weren’t you running the 36km? Having been knocked over with a flu early in August, and then being bed ridden for the Monday and Tuesday in the week leading up to Wonderland I realised by the Thursday that running the 36km wasn’t going to be a good decision and discretion over valour downgraded to run the 20km. The goal was to avoid pushing the bug causing the sinusitis into bronchitis and writing off September. In the end I think it was a wise call.
I chose to run with Tracy rather than pushing the 20km as this was our target race last year and it was a good opportunity to run and chat. All in all it was a fun run through awesome terrain, a very enjoyable run well within my comfort zone.
⌚️ This was my second run wearing the Garmin Forerunner 225, the first being Ararat parkrun on Saturday, so there is some extra heart rate and cadence info in the Strava log. Strava thinks it was a harder run when I was well inside my comfort zone. I think we can safely move all of those zones down a level as I ran mainly in Z2-moderate with some Z3-tempo on the descent. I think Strava needs some more data to work out my zones.
