You can choose 4 of the following

This is doing the rounds again;

❝ You are stranded on a desert island, you can choose 4 of the following ❞

Maslow’s ‘Hierarchy of Needs’ gives us a framework for understanding human motivations, what if we build a hierarchy of survival needs?

SURVIVAL - Rule of 3s
Rule of 3s
You can survive 3 minutes without AIR / or with SEVERE BLEEDING
You can survive 3 hours without SHELTER (extreme HEAT or COLD)
You can survive 3 days without WATER
You can survive 3 weeks without FOOD

SURVIVAL - Needs Hierarchy
Survival Needs Hierarchy
1. FIRST AID – Provide First Aid
2. SHELTER – Seek Shelter
3. FIRE – Build a Fire (collect tinder and fuel)
4. SIGNAL – Signal for Help
5. WATER – Drink water (collection & purification)
6. FOOD – Don’t worry about food (food is a longer term strategy item)

SURVIVAL - PLAN
PLAN
Protection (first aid, clothing, shelter, fire)
Location (attracting, holding and directing attention, being found)
Acquisition (acquiring water then food)
Navigation (travel, orientating yourself to your surroundings)

CHOICES
We are on a deserted island, this means that the island is ‘(of a place) empty of people‘ it doesn’t define the climate of weather conditions, so we need to make some assumptions as a tropical island is going to have different survival needs to an arctic island.

1.) First Aid – FIRST AID KIT (which also contains a lot of useful items and small tools), it’s no use having the rest of the survival kit if you bleed out.
2.) Shelter – TENT (a tent, a fly, tent pegs, poles and guys ropes). Choosing the tent rather than tarp as the tent has more useful items in the bundle. A larger shelter can be constructed over time, this solves the immediate problem.
3.) Fire – KNIFE not just for fire creation, kindling production, and firewood collection – but a general survival tool (hopefully the knife has a firesteel, but a firebow construction is the next option)
4.) Signal – I’m using an SOS on the beach, and my fire as a signal in this scenario; nothing extra from the list to achieve this
5.) Water – POT for collection and purification (and can be used for cooking food, use the lid as a frypan)
6.) Food – i can manufacture fishing tools from the first aid kit and tent items using my knife, I can make a spear and traps. Foraging is always an option.
